On Feb. 3, 2014, the newly constructed USS Somerset, a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock of the United States Navy, left Avondale Shipyard to great media fanfare and bittersweet waves. For seven decades, the shipyard had been a bustling, vibrant facility, employing generations of residents at all levels of education and skill sets – 26,000 men and women at its peak. A New Jersey-based salon that specializes in express hair and makeup styling has moved into Metairie.Cherry Blow Dry Bar opened at 210 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Suite B in early June. A news release said the shop created 12 jobs, with an additional 12 anticipated in the next two months.
The company provides blowouts, hair extensions and makeup services. It received a $225,000 loan from the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission, which financed half of the project and covered leasehold improvements and operating capital. Read more >>
A broadline distributor of food and food-related products, US Foods will make a significant investment to expand the company’s F. Christiana distribution facility in Marrero, Louisiana. The company will retain 140 existing jobs and create 45 new direct jobs.

AxoSim, which has developed a so-called “nerve on a chip” technology that allows scientists to test the effects drugs can have on people in the lab, was among three local tech startups to pitch their ideas Friday before a crowd at New Orleans Entrepreneur Week. As the winner, AxoSim gets a $100,000 investment toward its next round of funding.
This isn’t AxoSim’s first successful public pitch. It won the Louisiana BioChallenge business pitch in 2014, landing the $25,000 cash prize. “It compares us favorably to a number of markets,” says Jerry Bologna, President and CEO of The Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission. “I mean, the article took into account 590 cities, really, across the country.”
Once a bastion of hope for young orphaned children, the Spanish Renaissance-style buildings that make up the now vacant and slowly deteriorating Hope Haven campus in Marrero soon could be given a new purpose. The Jefferson Parish Council recently approved an agreement with the Archdiocese of New Orleans to lease the property and renovate the buildings for office space.
The nearly 500-acre Churchill Technology and Business Park in Avondale has been described as part of the “last frontier” in Jefferson Parish, in terms of the availability of developable green space. It’s part of the Fairfield land tract, prime acreage that parish officials have high hopes will attract upscale residential and business ventures.
To that end, the Jefferson Economic Development Commission is soliciting proposals for a master planner and has created an RFP – a request for proposals – that lays out the criteria and deadline for applying for the job.
Select Comfort, a $1.3 billion mattress company, has opened a new technical support contact center in Jefferson Parish. The new center occupies two-floors of an Elmwood office building that formerly housed Stewart Enterprises.
At the center, 225 employees with an average salaries of $30,000 will provide sales and support services for customers of the company’s Sleep Number® beds and products, according to Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission (JEDCO).

Two years after it was put up for sale, the former Avondale shipyard has found a buyer, but few details have been released about the idle West Bank facility’s future.
Huntington Ingalls Industries executives disclosed the development Aug. 3 in an earnings call with analysts. The Daily Press of Newport News, Virginia, where the defense giant is based, first reported the news Tuesday.
“We signed a purchase-and-sale agreement for the sale of the property,” Chris Kastner, Huntington Ingalls’ chief financial officer, told analysts, according to the report. “While this is a positive step toward an eventual sale, a comprehensive due diligence process will now be initiated before the potential buyer is obligated to close.”
Spurred by one of the fastest growing airports in the nation, Business Facilities Magazine has named New Orleans No. 7 for connectivity amongst mid-sized cities in North America.

If you’ve walked around Lakeside Mall lately, you might have noticed some stores are switching retail spaces. Officials said the moves aren’t because stores are closing, but to keep the mall fresh and lively. Where Banana Republic once was, now fresh drywall is being installed. In May of last year, Gap Inc. announced that 75 Old Navy and Banana Republic stores would be shut down but Tricia Phillpott with Lakeside Mall said their store wasn’t a part of those closures. The Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission has published a strategic plan to help improve the parish’s aging housing stock, much of which has grown obsolete and fallen out of favor among younger people who don’t share the same lifestyle priorities as their parents. The plan’s architects, who included public officials, bankers, real estate brokers and developers, know the plan isn’t a magic wand that will quickly counteract years of changing styles and tastes, but they say it can help the parish slowly redevelop its housing in a way that encourages mixed land uses, walkability and neighborhoods that are distinct from one another.
